If it is true that all roads lead to Rome, then you will hopefully be lucky enough to make it there eventually. Once there, the grandeur of the Ancient City may just seduce you away from any additional stops on your travel itinerary. But with a little bit of planning, the savvy traveler can visit the most important sites in the city in a few days.
Most visitors will arrive in the city at or near the Stazione Termini. This is a convenient location to settle in near, since it is the only spot in the city where the two Metro lines meet. Most of the attractions that you will want to see are easily accessed from either one of the two metro lines or from a bus that leaves outside of the station.
There are certain sites that are symbols of the city, and which you simply cannot miss. The Vatican City Museums, with the Sistine Chapel and the nearby St. Peter’s Basilica, are amazing treasure troves of the Roman Empire and the works of the great artists that Italy has produced.
For a walk through ancient history, one must visit the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill and the Pantheon. For the romantic’s tour of Rome, the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna are an excellent place to start a nighttime tour of the city. From there, it is a manageable walk to the Trevi Fountain for a quick coin toss that legend has it will ensure your return to Rome. Then you can finish the evening with a drink and a stroll around the Piazza Navona or Campo dei Fiori.
