Rome is the home of a very interesting tramway system. Although this tram system has been drastically improved from the older system whose trams used to growl through Rome's historic streets and monuments, the newer system is still heavily stressed. The five remaining routes and the one new route that opened many decades ago are now operated by the ATAC agency and they are all heavily used. Although new trams have been introduced to the system, this is still a bit of a trick making your way across Rome. Beyond all of the history, culture and beauty of Italy's great capital, riding the trams is an experience you won't want to miss.
There were six tram types running through the ancient streets of Rome only recently. Five of these were still in service in 2002 and it is a surprise and a delight to see that three of these are still running today. The remaining regular-service MRS cars were retired in early 2003 but there is also completely-restored tram 2137 which is used for charters and restaurant tram service. In keeping with their vintage style, old-fashioned bow collectors are used on these early model versions and this is a delight for tourists. The modern day tram system in Rome is certainly something for the tourists to see.
