Rome Subway - Rome

The Rome Metro is the main subway system that operates in Rome. It was opened in 1955 and there are 2 lines; the A and the B. A third line and a new branch of the original B-line are both under construction and a fourth line has been planned. The two existing lines, A & B, only intersect at one point which is Stazione Termini. This is the main train station in Rome.

The Rome Metro is part of an extensive subway network that is made of a tramway. There are several suburban and urban line around the city plus an "express line" to Fiumicino Airport. Most of the Ferrovia Regionale lines do provide a suburban service and the Roma-Nord lines offer a metro-type service. Compared to other European capitals, the Rome Metro is a lot less developed than these other cities. Like all the public transportation in Rome, the subway runs on the honor system. You can purchase tickets at some cafes and these tickets cost one euro. They are valid for one journey on the underground, or seventy-five minutes from time of validation. You won't have as bad a time on the subway as if you had tried to drive there yourself. Still, be careful on the Roman subway as the Metropolitana is full of pickpockets. Caution should always be exercised when using the metro.
