Rome-Capitoline Museum (Museo Capitolino) - Rome

The Capitoline Museums are a group of art and archeological museums in Piazza del Campidoglio. These are located on top of the famous Capitoline Hill in Rome, Italy. The plan of the museums is such that they are contained in three palazzi which also surround a central trapezoidal piazza. Since the 1400's, the museums' collection has grown to include an enormous amount of ancient Roman statues, inscriptions, and other artifacts. There is also a collection of medieval and Renaissance art and a wonderful collection of jewels. The Capitolinie Museums are owned and operated by the municipality of Rome and can be visited by anyone with an appreciation for historical, magnificent works of art.

Probably the most notable piece at the Capitoline Museums is the statue of a mounted rider Emperor Marcus Aurelius. It is the original on-site. Many Roman statues were destroyed by the Christian Church in the middle ages but this great work was preserved under the false pretense that it depicted the Emperor Constantine. The Capitoline Museum is located on two floors in the Palazzo Nuovo, and contains many statues, inscriptions, busts and other ancient Roman artifacts.
