Rome-Arch Of Constantine (Arco Di Constantino) - Rome

The Arch of Constantine is a magnificent arch in Rome that is placed between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It was first constructed to commemorate Constantine's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge. It is the latest of the long line of extinct arches in Rome and only is different in that it has extensive re-use of its parts from earlier buildings. During the Middle Ages, the Arch of Constantine was incorporated into one of the family strongholds of ancient Rome.

The general makeup of the Arch is such that it stands 21 meters high overall but it has three archways in its entirety. The central arch is 11.5 meters high and the lateral archways are only 7.4 meters high. The lower part of the monument is built of gigantic marble blocks and the top part which is called the attic is made of mostly brickwork that has been riveted with marble. There is a grand staircase that was formed in the thickness of the arch and it can be approached from a door that is set in the end towards the Palatine Hill. The general design of the Arch Constantine is such that it has its main part structured by detached columns. The Arch of Constantine is certainly a sight to behold.
