If you’re not sure what to expect from Czech cuisine, the good news is that you can find pretty much any kind of food that you would like in Prague. As the city continues to grow as a tourist destination and keeps modernizing, more and more international restaurants are popping up. But don’t miss the chance to enjoy a true ethic Czech meal.
There are three main elements to a local meal in Prague – meat or game, dumplings and cabbage. The meats are usually served in deliciously rich, hearty gravy, and will most likely be pork or beef. But venison, boar or other game are not uncommon. The fluffy dumplings made from either potato or flour are wonderful for sopping up that gravy. And the cabbage, usually cooked in a mix of sugar and spices, rounds out the plate. However, one of the best experiences in a Prague restaurant is the beer. You will find all kinds of flavours from the local microbreweries to enjoy.
Be aware that there is a VAT of 22% on restaurant meals in Prague, although it is usually included in the listed price and will be noted if it isn’t. Tipping is not as formal a deal in Prague as in other cities, but generally rounding up or leaving up to 10% is now a growing expectation. If your waiter brings trays of appetizers to the table when you sit down, ask if they are free of charge – chances are they aren’t.
