Prague Old Town Hall & Astronomical Clock - Prague

The Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Prague, mostly because visitors like to admire the construction of clock. It was built in 1338.

The Astronomical Clock was damaged during the Second World War. The city patched up the damage and placed a plaque as a reminder of what happened.

Huge crowds flock to the Astronomical Clock every hour during peak hours to see the procession of the wooden figures of the Twelve Apostles and Jesus Christ as they pass one another while the clock is chiming. Below them the skeleton of death delivers the chimes. Many also admire the 12 medallions with the signs of the zodiac created by Josef Manes in 1865.

The Old Town Hall was a meeting place for town officials when it was built in 1338. Today it’s too small for any administration purposes. But it is regularly used for Czech weddings, New Year’s celebrations, holiday markets (most often held around Easter and Christmas), and protests.

The Old Town Hall also is home to a Tourist Information Center. And for a fee tourists can climb its staircase to the top and get a bird’s eye view of the Old Town.
