Prague - Lesser Town - Mala Strana - Prague

In the Lesser Town of Prague, you will find many historical monuments. Some are churches like the Church of St. Jan Na Pradle, the Church of Our Lady beneath the Chain, the Church of St. Nicholas and St. Joseph’s Church. Others are palaces from centuries long ago, like Thunovsky Palace, Nostic’s Palace, Wallenstein Palace, and Liechtenstein Palace. You will also find The Plague Column with Statues of the Holiest Trinity.

Historically, this is the second Prague town and was built on the exact locations of an older settlement. The older settlement was founded by Premysl Otakar II in 1257. The planner Luipold was invited to create this new town, but was instructed that he much respect all the older, sacred places which were already in existence. Today, the town is about double the size that it was at its creation.

Much of Lesser Town has been destroyed through fire. In 1541, it suffered the greatest destruction when a fire started in one house and quickly spread all over the town. Unfortunately, during that fire, the Prague Castle was damaged as well. However, the Hunger Wall is still preserved for the most part to this day.
