Prague Charles Bridge - Prague

Charles Bridge is one of Prague’s most popular tourist sites, especially during the spring and summer months. This 13th century bridge is best viewed early in the morning when there aren’t as many people around, or in the evening where visitors can see the lights of the city.

It was built by King Charles IV’s favorite architect and builder, Peter Parler. Its purpose was to be a place for knight tournaments. During this time the only ornament on the bridge was a simple crucifix. That changed between 1600 to 1800 when the Catholic Church built another 30 statues along the bridge.

There are now 75 statues including one featuring a priest named John Nepomuk. John Nepomuk who was thrown over the bridge because he would not reveal the confessions of a queen

When the bridge was built, it was the only way across the Vltava River, and the only connection to Prague Castle. It was originally called the Stone Bridge or the Prague Bridge, but this name changed to the Charles Bridge in 1870.

The bridge is 516 meter long and 10 meters wide. It rests on 16 arches shielded with ice guards, and three gothic-style towers shelter it.

The bridge is full of souvenir stands, artists, and street musicians that cater to tourists during every season of the year.
