Sacre-Coeur - Paris

Construction began on this remarkable church and landmark in 1876. The church of the Sacred Heart was constructed with several brilliant white domes; the monies for the building were donated by all of the people of Paris, rich and poor alike. Today it is a premier tourist attraction where believers come to pray, light candles for the dead, and travelers from all over come to tour the fascinating interior and take photographs.

Visitors to the church will find a mosaic interior and murals of the passion of Christ on the back alter. Look up at the top of the dome from the inside for a depiction of Christ and try to go in the early evening, when the setting sun shines though the stained glass at its peak. The stained glass windows were destroyed in the wars, having had to be replaced several times. Believers contend that the crypt contains the scared heart of Christ--which is how the church got its name.

And here is a Paris secret for travelers; even though some of the best views of Paris are thought to be from the top of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, the inner gallery of the dome of this beautiful church provides a 40 mile radius view of the city of lights.
