As the capital of France and one of the most well-known cities not only in Europe, but in the whole world,
Paris has long been a favorite Tourist spot. Located on the banks of the River Seine,
Paris has been an important city since the Middle Ages, and has a multitude of landmarks and beautiful architecture designs from many periods in history for tourists to explore and admire. The most famous tourist attraction and architectural attraction in all of
Paris is of course the Eiffel Tower, but there are many other famous and beautiful structures and sight for tourists to visit, including the following two:
The Champs-Élysées is a popular site for tourists to visit, and is sometimes referred to as "the most beautiful avenue in the world." Names after the mysterious Elysian Fields in Greek mythology, the world famous Champs-Élysées stretches for two kilometers (approximately 1.25 miles) and includes one of the most famous landmarks in France, the Arc de Triomphe. Completed in the 1830's, the Arc is the second tallest such structure in the world and features four stunning sculptural groups as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Champs-Élysées also features several other amazing examples of architecture, including the Grand Palais and the Théâtre Marigny.
Another famous architectural landmark in
Paris is the beautiful Notre Dame de
Paris, more often known simply as the Notre Dame. One of the earliest examples of a Gothic cathedral, the construction actually occurred over most of the Gothic period, with the cathedral taking 185 years to be completed. The novel that most people associate with the cathedral, Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, was actually written to raise awareness of the cathedral during a period when it was in a state of disrepair and in danger of being torn down by city planners. Some of the important features of the Notre Dame de
Paris include the three distinct levels on the Western Façade, one of the first uses of flying buttresses, and the North and South rose windows, which are two of the few stained glass windows in all of Europe that still contain the original glass from the time of construction.
There are only two examples of the architectural offerings in
Paris. There are numerous other buildings and monuments in
Paris for visitors to discover and admire.
