Montmarte is a five hour walking tour which begins at Place Pigalle and ends up back at the starting point at one of the cafes along the walk. The round trip walking tour last an entire afternoon and like the other walking tours of Paris, should be taken in the early after noon or late morning so as not to miss any of the architecture as the sun sets.
The walk lasts around two and a half hours and you will probably want to stop for lunch, as you will pass by some of the best home cooking in the city. A quick warning, it is probably best not to venture into this area after dark, but starting around 10 in the morning is the most recommended. While the area isn't particularly dangerous compared to other districts in Paris, it does have its seedier areas.
The once sedate and quiet farming community gave way to cabarets, prostitutes, and other nefarious businesses during the late eighteen hundreds and is now one of the more colorful areas of Paris. Picasso lived here while he painted "The Third Rose," his famous portrait of Gertrude Stein, near the boat Washhouse which was destroyed by a 1970 fire.a little further on is The Espace Dali Montmarte, housing the works of Dali. Place du Calvaire offers yet another breathtaking view of the city of lights, and Place du Tertre is an old square famous for smaller tourist attractions such as popular shopping.
