Hotel Des Invalides - Paris

The original use for this "hotel" was to house disabled soldiers injured while fighting the Napoleonic wars. Upon completion its hallways and corridors go on for miles, and the view from the entrance is one of overbearing cannons. It is said to be haunted by the spirits of long departed soldiers who still cling to lost limbs and swoon with head injuries. Shrieks and moans have been heard late at might by caretakers.

It also houses one of the world's greatest military museums, the result of a collection started in 1794 by a French inspector. See Viking battle axes, war pitchforks, and early swords along with the more modern American Browning machine guns and a host of uniforms through the ages. While the museum is a memorial of sorts to man's evil and inhumanity, ironically the Nazi's looted it during their occupation of France and much of it was lost forever.

Of course, the feature exhibit here is the tomb of Napoleon himself. His death mask made by Antommarchi is on display here and a perfect recreation of the bedroom as it looked when he died in it on St. Helena. Also on display are his famous hat and his sword. The secret of Napoleon's Tomb? Only his heart is buried here.
