Macy’s has a long history, founded in 1847 by Rowland H. Macy. Still an icon worldwide, one of the original owners, Isidor Straus and his wife, were lost in the sinking of the ill-fated Titanic, but the empire remains.
An icon in New York, no trip is complete without a trip to Macy’s. The original store was opened in 1857 on Sixth Avenue and 14th Street. The store that is now standing was built in 1902. With its several entrances and 10 floors, this huge store at 34th & Broadway is a must-see for New York visitors. Full of gifts, clothing, household goods, and designer clothing, among other things, it’s a store in which one can get lost. Ironically, Macy’s is the last of the turn of the century department stores.
The Thanksgiving Day Parade is synonymous with Macy’s and has been for many decades. It is the official opening of the holiday season, drawing more than 2.5 million people to watch it. Visiting Macy’s is a sightseeing tour in itself, and there is very little you can’t find on one of the ten floors. The prices are comparable for the quality that is received, and for the foreign traveler, Macy’s gives you more for your money that you receive at many stores in your own country.
