London Transport

Transport for London is a local government body that is in charge of the transport system throughout the City of London. Its role is to implement and manage the transport strategy across London. Transport for London has developed an electronic journey planner which is available on the web and some payphones throughout London. This is a method for planning your transportation means which can make things a lot easier and more convenient.

Most of the transport modes in London have their own charging and ticketing areas. Buses and trams, however, share a common fare and ticketing area, and the DLR and the Underground share another. These mode-specific areas have a Travelcard system that they use which provides zonal tickets and validity periods from one day to one year. These are accepted on the DLR, buses, railways, trams, the Underground and even some river services. The Oyster card is a new smart card system which is used to pay individual fares or to carry various Travelcards and other passes. The person simply touches the card to the yellow card reader at the ticket gate and signals the gate to open. London transportation has truly become state of the art!
