British Museum - London

The British Museum in London is one of the world's largest and most important museums of human history and culture. This is the oldest museum in the world and it was first established in 1753. At that time, it was based largely on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. The British Museum has a collection of over seven million objects that come from all parts of the world. These objects illustrate the story of human culture from its first origins to the modern day. Many of the artifacts are stored underneath the museum itself because there is a lack of space to house them all. There are a wide range of learning experiences to be had here and anyone can discover something new.

Today, the British Museum is primarily a museum of antiquities and ethnography. The permanent exhibition on the Enlightenment in the King's Library is extraordinary and can give some idea of the original scope of the museum. The notorious Cupboard 55 in the Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities is inaccessible by the general public and has a reputation for containing some of the most erotic objects in the British Museum. There is definitely something for everyone at the British Museum.
