St Mary Of The Sea Cathedral - Barcelona

The St Mary of the Sea Cathedral, also known as Eglesia de Santa Maria del Mar, is widely regarded as the most beautiful of all the Gothic buildings in Barcelona. The building is situated in the ‘El Born’ quarter of the city, in a quaint little plaza located down a labyrinth of tiny stone streets. The Born quarter is often associated with sea related jobs such as fishing and sailing, hence the building being named after the patron saint of sailors. Built between 1329 and 1384, it represents the most pure in style of all the Gothic churches in Catalonia. The interior is breathtaking, with a particular feature of note being the large stained glass windows. The large rose window was replaced in the 15th century after the first was lost to an earthquake some years before. The inside of the church was ransacked during the civil war, but this allows for an even better view of the building’s large interior. Beside the Cathedral is an important Catalan monument known as fossar de les moreres, which is the place where a large number of fighters were buried after the Barcelona defeat in 1714. The Cathedral hosts classical music concerts, thanks to the building’s excellent acoustics, and it is the number one wedding venue within the city.
