The excellent Sagarra restaurant is located in the Raval Quarter, and is well known throughout the city. The restaurant mixes a variety of styles, and its Catalan and Mediterranean inspired food is hard to label. The name Sagarra has a long tradition of culinary excellence in the area, with a delicatessen bearing the same name opening nearby as far back as the 19th century. The restaurant itself is refined and without ostentation, with colours of dark blue and orange throughout. In the mornings and afternoons Sagarra acts as café, and tapas is served on its terrace. At lunchtimes the menu is light and fresh and the clientele mainly consists of local workers. A special two-course meal at lunchtime is often offered, which is great for a quick and inexpensive lunch with friends. In the evenings the restaurant serves a selection of pastas, salads, meat and fish, mostly of Catalan origins. A particular favourite is the cod with onions, pine nuts and tomato and currants known as fish el bacallà a la catalana. The restaurant’s signature desserts are the Crème Catalana, and the hard to find Pijama, which consists of ice cream, fruits, flan and chocolate. The Sagarra also serves a wide range of Catalan wines and Spanish Cavas.
