Gothic Quarter – Barri Gotic - Barcelona

While the Barri Gotic was once the thriving centre of the city of Barcelona, about the mid eighteenth century, the emphasis shifted to Eixample and left behind an absolute wonder. Barcelona’s gothic quarter is the most important and extensive example of fourteenth century gothic architecture in the world and is literally a mine rich in gems of architectural and historic importance that no visitor to Barcelona can afford to miss.

Sunday morning is by far the best time to visit the Gothic Quarter if you have the opportunity, this is not only because the feel of the area suits Sundays, or because you will find the most activity on this day, but because you will have the opportunity to visit the Ajuntament and watch the famous Barcelonan dance of the sardana right in front of the cathedral. If you happen to be visiting on the second or fourth Sunday of the month then you will also be able to visit the Generalitat and take the tour.

If you are interested in art, then Place Nova has a fine Picasso frieze and the Barcino by Brossa which are two highlights that you will not wish to miss.
