Cathedral De La Seu - Barcelona

This exquisite gothic Cathedral lies in the heart of Barcelona, in what is known as the Barri Gòtic or Gothic District. There has been a place of worship on the site as far back as A.D 343, when a Roman Basilica stood where the current Cathedral now rests. This was replaced by other buildings, including a Roman chapel that was completed in 1268.This chapel still remains, and was incorporated into the design of the cloisters of the current Cathedral. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1298, under the guidance of King Jaume II. Due to unforeseen circumstances at the time including civil war and the Black Death, the building took over 150 years to complete. In fact, the magnificent spire was not added until the 19th century, based on the original 15th century design of the Frenchman Charles Galters. The Cathedral is named after the patron saint of Barcelona, Saint Eulalia, whose tomb in fact lies in the Cathedral’s crypt. Although the building is often simply known as La Seu, its full name is Cathedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulalia. La Seu is known for its elegantly carved choir stalls, and the 14th century cloisters that are home to a small pond of white geese. Inside the cloisters there is also a small museum, which contains liturgist artefacts.
