Amsterdam Transport

There are several ways to get around in Amsterdam. One of the easiest ways for travelers is to take the bus, tram, or a taxi. If you are a local you probably ride your bike. If you are there for vacation, you might choose to take at least one of your destination trips on the canal in a boat.

The Tram is the most common way for people who live in and travel to Amsterdam to get from point "A" to point "B." Seventeen tramlines make up this form of transportation, and you can get pretty much anywhere you want to go with relative ease. Be very aware of some of the stations, though, as Amsterdam is admittedly full of pickpockets who use the tram stations for an easy mark. There are two main metro, or above ground tram lines in the city as well. They run parallel at each end of the city and run in a direct line.

Ferries, buses, and taxi's make up the other forms of public transportation. The maps are pretty easy to follow, and traveler's information desks are available through out the city and in your hotel to help you navigate.

Most of the residents ride their bikes everywhere they go. Bike shops are common and have everything one would need to complete an emergency repair. They also rent bikes. If you can read a map fairly well and are a little adventurous, why not rent a bike during your stay in Amsterdam and see the city one lane at a time?
