Located in Dam Square, with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) is one of the most popular sites in all of Amsterdam. Originally built as a church, they now hold museum and cultural exhibitions here throughout the year. New Church is also used for crowning leaders of the Netherlands and during the annual Remembrance Day, in May of each year.
During the winter the museum focuses on building exhibits that highlight religious and cultural elements of other countries and societies. Past exhibits have included exhibitions on Islam and its impact on the world, and the history of religion in Mexico. During the rest of the year New Church collaborates with other museums to display traveling exhibitions and through a special agreement with the Stedelijk Museum holds special attractions.
Currently the Stedelijk Museum is undergoing two years of renovations and has relied upon its good relationship with the New Church to continue displaying touring exhibits for the Dutch public.
Other entertainment events hosted at Nieuwe Kerk include the Mozart Choral Festival and the weekly organ concerts in the main hall of the New Church. Those visitors interested in learning more about the history of the exhibition center and architecture of the church can buy books and other materials in the Nieuwe Kerk gift shop.
