National Museum (Rijksmuseum) - Amsterdam

Perhaps best known for its collection of 17th Century Dutch artists, the Rijksmuseum has close to one million objects. Boasting the title as largest museum of art in history, the Netherlands museum features twenty Rembrandts and also highlights works by Vermeer, Frans Hals and Jan Steen. The museum has three shops: one on the first floor inside, one on the Museumplein outside, and the last on the Rijksmuseum website.

Located in the heart of Amsterdam on the Museumplein square, the building has been standing in architect Pierre Cuypers' imposing building since 1885. Many alternations and renovations have been made to the design of the building over the years. Currently, the museum is undergoing an incredible restoration that will continue through 2008, which will add a new entrance, the Asian Pavilion, the Study Centre and restore and remodel the main building.

The Rijksmuseum still displays the best of the best in its permanent collection in the Philips Wing. The South Wing, the Drucker-Fraser Extension, displays a collection of 19th Century art, as well as a collection of Friends of Asian Art. The Rijksmuseum is open daily from 9:00 to 18:00, and on Fridays from 18:00 to 22:00. The museum ticket counter is open through 17:30 daily and 21:00 Fridays. The library and print room's hours are from 10:00-17:00 Tuesday through Saturday.
